Al Ahly Reach CAF Confederation Cup Final to Face Séwé Sport
Egyptian giants Al Ahly have booked their place in the CAF Confederation Cup final, setting up a showdown with Ivory Coast’s Séwé Sport in what promises to be a historic encounter this November.
Al Ahly secured their spot with a 2-1 victory over Coton Sport of Cameroon in the second leg of their semi-final on Saturday, overturning a 1-0 deficit from the first leg and becoming the first Egyptian club to reach the final of the competition since its inception.
However, the path to victory was far from straightforward. The match began ominously for the Cairo-based side when Coton Sport’s Joseph Kombous capitalised on a defensive mix-up to give the visitors a shock lead. With a 2-0 aggregate advantage, the Cameroonians momentarily appeared poised to pull off an upset.
But Al Ahly responded with resilience and flair. Burkinabé midfielder Moussa Yedan delivered a moment of brilliance, slicing through the Cameroonian defence to level the score on the night and reignite hopes for the home side. The goal injected much-needed momentum into the Red Devils’ campaign.
In the second half, it was Amr Gamal who completed the comeback, coolly converting to make it 2-1 and secure Al Ahly’s progression on aggregate. The crowd at the Cairo International Stadium erupted in celebration as the Egyptian club kept their continental ambitions alive.
Al Ahly, a record eight-time CAF Champions League winner, now has the chance to add the Confederation Cup to its illustrious trophy cabinet—an achievement that has eluded the club until now.
They will face Séwé Sport of Ivory Coast in the final, after the Ivorian side overcame AC Léopards of Congo in their own semi-final encounter. Séwé Sport, known for their disciplined and dynamic play, will be aiming to cap off a remarkable tournament run with their first continental title.
The final, set to be played as a single match this November, will mark a significant milestone for both clubs. For Al Ahly, it’s an opportunity to extend their dominance beyond the Champions League and reaffirm their stature as Africa’s most successful club. For Séwé Sport, it’s a shot at continental glory and the chance to make history for Ivorian football.
Speaking after the match, Al Ahly coach expressed pride in his side’s comeback. “We knew it would be a difficult task after the first leg, but the players showed character and determination. We’re delighted to be in the final,” he said.
Despite early nerves, Al Ahly’s quality and experience ultimately prevailed—a warning to Séwé Sport that the Egyptians remain a formidable force on the African stage.
