Al-Ahly fines goalkeeper El-Shenawy following disciplinary incident
Al-Ahly’s management has imposed a financial penalty on first-team captain and goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy following his exclusion from the recent goalless draw against Al-Ahly Bank in the Egyptian Premier League.
The decision comes after an on-field altercation involving El-Shenawy and teammate Imam Ashour.
According to Mohamed Ramadan, Al-Ahly’s director of football, El-Shenawy has been fined 30,000 Egyptian pounds for failing to attend the training session designated for players who were excluded from the squad.
The veteran goalkeeper has accepted the punishment and was also cautioned to demonstrate greater commitment to the team moving forward.
Swiss head coach Marcel Koller excluded El-Shenawy from the matchday squad for the Al-Ahly Bank game as a disciplinary measure.
This followed an incident that occurred after the team’s African Champions League match against Abidjan, during which tensions flared between El-Shenawy and Ashour.
Despite the disciplinary setback, both El-Shenawy and Ashour have since resumed training with the squad in preparation for their upcoming CAF Champions League clash against South African giants Orlando Pirates.
Monday’s league match at Al-Salam Stadium saw Al-Ahly held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Al-Ahly Bank, leaving fans and management eager for stronger performances in the weeks ahead.
The stalemate marked the fourth week of the Egyptian Premier League and added to the scrutiny surrounding the team’s recent displays.
As Al-Ahly now shifts focus to their continental ambitions, the incident underscores the importance of discipline and unity within the squad as they prepare for crucial challenges both domestically and internationally.
