Al Ahly escalates legal complaints over fan insult controversy
Al Ahly SC has taken a strong stance after comments made by Yahya Aboul Fotouh, Deputy Chairman of the National Bank of Egypt, which were perceived as insulting to the club’s supporters.
The club instructed its legal counsel, Mohamed Osman, to file urgent complaints with five major authorities: the Minister of Finance (who holds ownership of the National Bank), the Minister of Education, the Minister of Youth and Sports, the Governor of the Central Bank, and the Public Prosecutor.
The controversy erupted after Aboul Fotouh remarked that poor education in Egypt led to a large number of Al Ahly fans, while suggesting the country’s successful banks are run by Zamalek supporters. Al Ahly’s official statement denounced the “divisive” nature of these comments and said such behavior would only sow discord during a time when unity is essential.
The club said, “These complaints aim to protect Al Ahly and its fans, and prevent similar incidents that could incite unrest among Egyptians.”
Meanwhile, Al Ahly received preliminary approval for 30,000 spectators for their upcoming African Champions League match and continued preparations for key fixtures, as the issue with Aboul Fotouh unfolded.
