Al Ahly deny reports they will reject Egyptian Super Cup invitation

Al Ahly football director Wael Gomaa has denied reports that the club has decided against taking part in the next edition of the Egyptian Super Cup.

Reports had suggested Al Ahly were unhappy with the possibility of entering the competition through a “golden card” invitation.

But Gomaa told FilGoal.com: “Everything being said about Al Ahly refusing to play in the Egyptian Super Cup is not true. We have not discussed the matter at all so far.”

The Egyptian Football Association has identified the first week of November as the most likely date for the tournament, according to information obtained by FilGoal.com.

The competition is expected to take place in the United Arab Emirates, with four teams involved. Zamalek will participate as league champions, while Pyramids will enter as winners of the Egypt Cup and Al Masry as winners of the League Cup.

Al Ahly are expected to be invited to complete the line-up through the golden card.

Al Ahly are the holders of the Egyptian Super Cup after beating Zamalek 2-0 in last season’s final in Abu Dhabi.

Ceramica Cleopatra finished third in that tournament, with Pyramids in fourth place.

The victory gave Al Ahly their 16th Egyptian Super Cup title, with eight of those victories coming against Zamalek.

It was also Al Ahly’s fifth successive title in the competition. They became champions for the third time since the Egyptian Super Cup adopted its new four-team format, having won all of their matches in the tournament.
