Al Ahly consider Romanian tactician Dan Petrescu despite health concerns
Romanian coach Dan Petrescu has emerged as a potential candidate for the Al Ahly managerial job amid uncertainty over the future of current trainer Jess Thorup.
The Egyptian giants are expected to ring changes to their technical team following an unimpressive campaign that saw them suffer early elimination from the CAF Champions League.
According to reports, Petrescu has been shortlisted among the coaches for the Al Ahly job due to his vast managerial experience and distinguished football background both as a player and a coach in Europe.
Petrescu is widely regarded as one of Romania’s most accomplished managers and also enjoyed a notable playing career, particularly during his time with Chelsea in the English Premier League.
However, reports surrounding the coach’s health condition have raised concerns within discussions over his possible appointment at the Egyptian giants.
As per sources, there remains significant ambiguity regarding Petrescu’s medical situation after widespread reports in Romania claimed he has been battling cancer.
The source revealed that speculation intensified following Petrescu’s sudden departure from Romanian side CFR Cluj last August, a decision reportedly linked to health complications.
The concerns reportedly deepened after Petrescu appeared in Romanian media last December looking noticeably thinner, with reports claiming he had lost nearly 30 kilograms within a short period.
Despite the worrying reports, the source explained that the former Chelsea defender is currently in a recovery phase after undergoing more than one surgery and is attempting to return to football management again.
Petrescu’s health situation has also attracted attention in England due to his historical connection with Chelsea, where he remains a respected figure among supporters of the London club.
Recent reports in Romania additionally linked Rapid Bucharest with a possible move for Petrescu once he fully recovers and is ready to return to coaching duties.
Meanwhile, Al Ahly continue evaluating several managerial options ahead of a potentially crucial transition period, with the club aiming to appoint a coach capable of maintaining its dominance domestically and on the continental stage.
