Al Ahly confirm CAF sanctions after AS FAR incident
Al Ahly have officially announced the Confederation of African Football’s sanctions following crowd trouble in their goalless draw against Morocco’s AS FAR in the CAF Champions League group finale.
The match saw sections of Al Ahly’s supporters throw bottles and objects onto the pitch, prompting a formal complaint from the Moroccan club to CAF’s disciplinary committee.
In a statement on Thursday, the Egyptian giants revealed they had received a letter from CAF confirming a two-game fan ban in African competitions, with one of those matches suspended.
The decision also includes a 50,000 dollar fine, plus an additional 10,000 dollars for the use of laser pointers by supporters during the game against AS FAR. Al Ahly added that their legal department will take the necessary steps in response to the ruling.
As a result, Al Ahly will be forced to host Tunisian side Esperance in the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on 21 March behind closed doors at home.
The first leg is scheduled to be played in Rades on 15 March, with Esperance having already announced that the Cairo clash would take place without fans.
