Al Ahly coach David Davis hails ‘dream week’ after wins over Fuchse Berlin and Zamalek
Al Ahly head coach David Davis described his side’s achievements as “a dream” after they defeated Fuchse Berlin and Zamalek during a memorable week at the Handball Club World Championship in Egypt.
Al Ahly secured the bronze medal by beating traditional rivals Zamalek 30-25. Earlier in the competition, they overcame German side Fuchse Berlin 30-27 in their final group-stage match.
“This week was a dream for me,” Davis told Al Ahly’s official website. “It began with beating a European team such as Fuchse Berlin in the group stage, and ended with finishing third against our traditional rivals Zamalek and winning the bronze medal.”
Davis said the results had produced an emotional and unforgettable week for the club.
“It was a perfect week in every sense,” he added. “There were truly strong emotions, and I will never forget it. I am very proud of the players and what they delivered, as well as the work we did.”
The Al Ahly coach also urged his players to maintain their current standards, stressing that the campaign was still at an early stage.
“We have to continue at this level,” he said. “This is only the beginning of the season, and we must keep working, performing and improving. The next step is to win another title.”
Al Ahly have now turned their attention to the African Clubs Champions League, with Davis announcing the squad for the tournament.
The team’s delegation is scheduled to travel early on Saturday to the Angolan capital in preparation for their title defence.
Al Ahly have been drawn in Group B alongside Angolan club Interclube and Cote d’Ivoire’s Renaissance.
