Mahmoud El Khatib is making big moves behind closed doors to fix Al Ahly’s coaching situation after their shock exit from the African Champions League at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns.
Following a 1-1 draw at Cairo International Stadium, which sent Sundowns through thanks to a 0-0 first-leg result, El Khatib wasted no time. A source told Kooora that El Khatib met with sporting director Mohamed Ramadan immediately after the match.
The club has decided to part ways with Swiss coach Marcel Koller and has opened talks with his agent, Dino Lambrate, to lower a €440,000 release clause.
Al Ahly may appoint a temporary coach for about a week while they search for a permanent boss.
Top of the list is Portuguese coach Jose Gomes, though his current club’s battle against relegation could delay talks. Other names in the frame include Carlos Queiroz and Germany’s Marco Rose, although salary demands may be an issue.
El Khatib is focused on reaching a friendly deal with Koller while pushing hard to bring in a new coach fast.
