Al Ahly begin search for Amr El Gazar replacement after serious knee injury

Al Ahly have started looking for a replacement for defender Amr El Gazar ahead of the January transfer window after the player was diagnosed with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

The Egyptian club confirmed previously that El Gazar had suffered the injury, which is expected to rule him out for a significant period. The defender was injured during Al Ahly’s 1-1 draw with Al Mokawloon Al Arab in the fourth round of the Egyptian Premier League.

According to information obtained by FilGoal.com, a meeting was held to discuss the club’s search for a defender capable of progressing the ball from the back.

The meeting was attended by Al Ahly board member Sayed Abdel Hafiz, football director Wael Gomaa, contracts director Essam Serag and chief scout Ahmed Abou Moslem.

The club is considering a number of options from the domestic market, as well as Egyptian players based overseas. Al Ahly are also assessing foreign defenders as potential targets if رضا سليم or اشرف داري leave during the January window.

Among the leading Egyptian defenders playing abroad are Hossam Abdel Maguid, currently with Bulgarian club Ludogorets and formerly of Zamalek; Omar Fayed of Italian side Frosinone; and Mohamed Abdelmonem, who plays for French club Nice.

Al Wakrah midfielder Hamdy Fathy is also being considered as an option because he can operate in central defence.

El Gazar’s injury was further assessed after scans were carried out. Ahmed Gaballah, head of Al Ahly’s medical staff, said the tests performed on the player that morning showed a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament as well as damage to the medial meniscus.

Gaballah added that the club was working to determine when El Gazar would undergo surgery.
