The age-old rivalry between Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Zamalek has been reignited, this time off the pitch.
Tensions have flared behind the scenes as both clubs scramble for key signings ahead of the new season.
After a period of relative calm following Mortada Mansour’s exit, the peace has shattered. The issue is, Ahmed Mostafa Zizo’s switch to Al Ahly after his Zamalek contract ended. But that’s just the beginning.
Three transfer deals have stoked the flames.
Al Ahly’s push to land National Bank striker Osama Faisal, a former Zamalek player who netted 12 league goals last season, drew backlash. Zamalek tried to block the move, seen by some as payback after Al Ahly’s interference in other transfers.
Next, Zamalek targeted Ahmed Abdelkader, back at Al Ahly after a loan spell in Qatar. The player refused to extend his deal or go on loan, fuelling talk of a secret agreement with Zamalek.
Finally, both sides clashed over Hamed Hamdan, the midfielder from Petrojet. Zamalek had a deal in place, until Al Ahly reportedly entered the picture.
