Head coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor has set his sights firmly on silverware, declaring his intention to guide Gor Mahia F.C. to both the Kenyan Premier League title and the domestic FA Cup this season.
The former Ghana international, appointed before the start of the 2025/26 campaign, has enjoyed a bright start to life in Nairobi.
Under his stewardship, Gor Mahia have surged to the top of the league table, amassing 43 points from 20 matches and opening up a six-point cushion over fierce rivals AFC Leopards.
Speaking to Graphic Sports, Akonnor expressed satisfaction with the team’s steady progress, describing the opening phase of his tenure as promising.
He highlighted the backing of the club’s leadership and stakeholders as a key factor behind the side’s upward trajectory.
“So far things are going on right, and we are targeting the league title and the FA Cup,” he stated.
Gor Mahia’s resurgence follows the disappointment of last season, when they finished second to Kenyan Police FC. Akonnor believes that near miss has strengthened the squad’s resolve and sharpened its competitive edge.
Drawing on his managerial stints with Ghanaian heavyweights Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, the 51-year-old stressed the importance of discipline, focus and consistency as the title race enters a decisive phase.
He added that lifting multiple trophies would not only reaffirm Gor Mahia’s domestic dominance but also boost their profile in continental competitions.
In recognition of his impact, Akonnor was named SportPesa League Coach of the Month for January.
