Le Havre Set to Sign Nigerian Midfielder Akeem Agbetu
Le Havre AC are closing in on the signing of Nigerian midfielder Akeem Agbetu, who is being lined up as a replacement for Alexandre Bonnet, following the latter’s expected move to AC Ajaccio.
According to regional outlet Paris-Normandie, the Ligue 2 side is in advanced talks to bring in Agbetu, with the transfer likely to be completed within the week. The 26-year-old former Nigeria U20 international is set to arrive from Turkish outfit Linyitspor.
Born on March 10, 1988, Agbetu is no stranger to Turkish football. After moving to the country in 2008, the attacking midfielder played for several clubs including Kocaelispor, Sivasspor, Samsunspor, Karşıyaka SK, and Boluspor before joining Linyitspor for the 2013–14 season.
Known for his pace and technical ability, Agbetu offers versatility in midfield and attack, attributes that could prove valuable for Le Havre as they look to strengthen their squad after Bonnet’s imminent departure. Bonnet, a key figure at Le Havre for several seasons, is on the verge of completing a move to Ligue 2 rivals AC Ajaccio, prompting the club to act swiftly in the transfer market.
Agbetu also brings a wealth of experience from his time in the Turkish second and top divisions, with over 100 professional appearances to his name. Though he never made a senior appearance for Nigeria, he featured prominently at youth level and was once regarded as a promising talent emerging from the Nigerian football system.
Should the deal go through, Agbetu will become one of a handful of African players currently plying their trade at Le Havre, a club renowned for its development of international talent, including former stars like Riyad Mahrez, Paul Pogba, and Benjamin Mendy.
The signing would mark another important step in Le Havre’s efforts to mount a competitive challenge in Ligue 2 this season, as the club continues to rebuild with a focus on both youth and experience.
