Ajax close in on Sunderland’s Simon Adingra before transfer deadline

Ajax are in advanced negotiations with Sunderland to sign Ivory Coast winger Simon Adingra on a season-long loan, with an option to buy included in the proposed deal.

The 24-year-old is expected to become Ajax’s new left winger, with the Amsterdam club keen to complete the transfer before the window closes at 23:59 on Wednesday.

Adingra missed Sunderland’s opening two Premier League matches this season because of a minor injury, but that is not expected to prevent the move from going through.

Ajax have been searching for a left-sided attacker who can contribute consistently and create opportunities in one-on-one situations. They believe Adingra has the qualities required to take over from Mika Godts, who has left the club for Paris Saint-Germain.

The proposed agreement would initially bring Adingra to the Eredivisie for one season. Ajax would then have the option to make the transfer permanent, although the terms of the potential purchase have not been disclosed.

Adingra arrived in Europe at the age of 18 when he joined FC Nordsjælland. Two and a half years later, the Danish club sold him to Brighton & Hove Albion.

The winger spent time on loan at Union Saint-Gilloise and AS Monaco during his career before moving to Sunderland last season. Sunderland paid just under 25 million euros to sign him.

Adingra has made 74 Premier League appearances in total, scoring nine goals. He is now on the verge of moving to the Netherlands as Ajax attempt to strengthen their attacking options.

The Ivorian’s pace and ability to beat opponents individually have made him the profile Ajax were actively seeking. The club’s negotiations with Sunderland are at an advanced stage, and the remaining issue is to complete the move before Wednesday night’s deadline.
