Ahmed Shobier clears air on Herve Renard links to Al Ahly
Egyptian TV presenter and former Al Ahly goalkeeper Ahmed Shobier has revealed the truth behind talk of Herve Renard taking over the Cairo giants after leaving Saudi Arabia.
The French coach announced on Friday that the Saudi Arabian Football Federation had informed him his spell in charge of the national team was over, less than two months before the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
Shobier explained on his “Al Nazer” show that, “after his departure from the Saudi national team was confirmed, some reports immediately linked Al Ahly with negotiations for Herve Renard.” However, he stressed that the club “is not in talks with any coach at the moment” and is fully focused on the final four league matches as they chase 12 points and a late title push.
He added that last winter Al Ahly were media-linked with “around 35 players,” which hurt the quality and speed of their business, and he sees a similar media frenzy building now.
According to Shobier, the coaching question is frozen until after the World Cup and the league’s August restart, whether that means renewing with current boss Jess Thorup or appointing someone new. Al Ahly sit third in the Egyptian Premier League table, two points behind leaders Zamalek and level with Pyramids on points but behind on goal difference, having played one game more.
