Former Egypt international Ahmed Hegazi has been appointed assistant sporting director at Saudi club NEOM, only days after bringing an end to his playing career.

The Saudi side confirmed the appointment on its official social media channels, ensuring the former captain remains part of the club’s long-term project after retiring at the expiry of his contract.

Announcing the move, NEOM said: “After years of giving on the pitch, a new chapter begins in the career of a captain who concluded his journey with the NEOM logo, and with it he embarks with greater passion and ambition, Captain Ahmed Hegazi as Assistant to the Sporting Director at NEOM Club.”

The club added: “Welcome back home, Captain Ahmed, and we wish you the best of luck in your new mission.”

Smooth transition from player to executive

Hegazi announced his retirement from professional football earlier this month, drawing the curtain on a distinguished career for club and country.

The 35-year-old joined NEOM from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad in the summer of 2024 and went on to become a key figure both on and off the pitch.

During his spell at the club, the Egyptian defender made 52 appearances across all competitions, scoring once and providing one assist while playing an important leadership role as NEOM continued to develop its football project.

Leadership valued beyond the pitch

The club’s decision to retain Hegazi in a senior management position reflects the esteem in which he is held by the hierarchy.

Renowned throughout his career for his leadership qualities and experience, the former Egypt captain is now expected to help shape NEOM’s sporting strategy from the executive level as the ambitious Saudi club continues its long-term growth.

The appointment also marks the beginning of a new phase for one of Africa’s most accomplished defenders, who transitions directly from leading on the pitch to influencing decisions behind the scenes.
