Agyemang-Badu criticises Ghana’s player transition issues amid Black Stars’ struggles

Former Black Stars midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has pinpointed the ineffective transitioning of players as a key factor behind the recent struggles of Ghana’s national football teams.

He argued that the current lack of proper player development and transition from youth sides to the senior national team has contributed significantly to the team’s poor performances in recent years.

Badu, who was part of the U-20 squad that won the World Cup in Egypt, specifically highlighted that the seamless transition that once existed has disappeared, especially since his generation.

He also raised concerns over the growing reliance on players with dual nationality, suggesting this is another factor undermining the Black Stars’ fortunes.

“If the national teams are not doing well, whatever you do, we’ll talk about it. So, it’s a problem — the transition,” he told Joy Sports.

“How we transition players from the junior national teams to the Black Stars, and the quick solutions we want.

“Listen, some years ago, we had a history of how we managed our national teams. It didn’t start with the current FA.

“It has been like this since our time with the under-20s, when seven of us were promoted to the Black Stars.”

Ghana’s recent struggles have been glaring, with the Black Stars failing to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in 21 years.

The team’s form in major international competitions has also been disappointing, with the Black Stars not progressing past the group stage of any major tournament since 2019.
