Aguerd outlines why Real Sociedad move fell through after Marseille return

Nayef Aguerd has rejected suggestions that a physical problem caused his proposed move from Olympique de Marseille to Real Sociedad to collapse, saying the medical examinations in Spain were completed without incident and approved by both clubs.

The Morocco international returned to France after undergoing his medical, prompting speculation about a possible injury or fitness concern. Aguerd has now addressed those questions in a statement published on his Instagram account.

According to the defender, the disagreement was not related to the results of the medical tests. Instead, it centred on the timetable for his return to full availability and the conditions attached to his integration into the Real Sociedad squad.

After discussions with the Spanish club’s manager, Aguerd was expected to follow a gradual programme designed to restore him to full fitness and playing capacity. The Real Sociedad coach, however, wanted the 30-year-old to be ready to contribute immediately.

That difference in expectations ultimately prevented the transfer from being completed, with Aguerd returning to Olympique de Marseille.

The centre-back remains under contract with Olympique de Marseille until June 2030. His current estimated market value is €15m, according to Transfermarkt, although the transfer window is still open and his situation could yet change.

Al Ittihad and Napoli are monitoring developments involving the Morocco defender, according to exclusive information reported by Africafoot. No further decision over his future has been confirmed.

Aguerd’s return comes as Real Sociedad prepare for their second league match of the season against Real Betis. The fixture is due to take place shortly, with Real Sociedad priced at 3.25 to win, a draw listed at 3.10 and Real Betis given odds of 2.05 by 1xbet.

The failed move has therefore left Aguerd back at his current club, despite the medical process in Spain having been completed and accepted by both sides. His explanation seeks to draw a clear distinction between a fitness issue and the separate disagreement over how quickly he would be expected to play.

Aguerd joined Olympique de Marseille’s plans with a long-term contract already in place, but interest from abroad means uncertainty remains while the market is open.
