While Manchester United and Aston Villa command Sunday’s spotlight, another contest is gathering momentum across the continent.
The SuperSport African Player of the Month returns for its third instalment, celebrating the outstanding contributions of African footballers in the Premier League and giving fans across the continent a direct say in who deserves monthly recognition.
Following the crowning of Cameroon international Bryan Mbeumo in August and Ghana’s Antoine Semenyo in September, five new nominees have emerged for October.
Representing five African nations and five different Premier League clubs, Alex Iwobi, Mohammed Kudus, Nicolas Jackson, Bryan Mbeumo and Abdul Ouattara have all delivered performances worthy of recognition.
With voting now open, the decision rests with the fans.
Nicolas Jackson: Senegal’s goal machine
There is perhaps no better example of October’s African excellence than Nicolas Jackson.
The Aston Villa forward enjoyed a prolific month, scoring four goals in four Premier League appearances to emerge as the leading goalscorer among October’s nominees.
His standout performance came against Manchester City on 24 October, when he struck twice in an impressive 2-1 victory. He also found the net against Brentford on 10 October and Fulham on 31 October.
Four appearances. Four goals. And a nomination that places him firmly in contention for the October crown.
Jackson now takes that form into Sunday’s Match of the Week against Manchester United, giving the Old Trafford showdown an added African storyline.
With his goalscoring exploits already making headlines, he will be looking to continue that momentum against a United defence that will need to be at its best to contain him.
For fans watching on Sunday, there is another reason to keep an eye on the Senegalese forward: he is not only one of Villa’s most important attacking threats, but also one of the five players supporters can vote for in this month’s award.
Bryan Mbeumo: Cameroon
Manchester United’s Bryan Mbeumo is back among the nominees after another productive month in front of goal.
The Cameroonian international registered two goals in four Premier League appearances, finding the net against Tottenham Hotspur on 10 October and Leeds United on 18 October.
Already familiar with the feeling of winning the award, having claimed the inaugural August title, Mbeumo will be hoping to add another accolade to his growing collection.
His direct attacking approach, work rate and ability to deliver in important moments make him a compelling candidate.
There is also an interesting subplot on Sunday: Mbeumo and Jackson will be on opposing sides at Old Trafford, with both African stars looking to make their presence felt in the Match of the Week.
Alex Iwobi: Nigeria
Nigeria’s Alex Iwobi has once again demonstrated that influence in the Premier League goes well beyond goals and assists.
The Fulham midfielder recorded one goal in four appearances during October, finding the net against Hull City on 17 October.
His contribution extended beyond the scoresheet, however, with two clean sheets during the assessment period and an impressive average rating of 7.7 per game highlighting his consistency and all-round influence.
Iwobi’s ability to link play, dictate tempo and contribute to both phases of the game makes him an important figure for Fulham and a worthy contender for the award.
Mohammed Kudus: Ghana
Ghana international Mohammed Kudus makes the shortlist after an influential month for Tottenham Hotspur.
Although he did not find the net in October, the attacking midfielder registered two assists in four appearances, setting up goals against Coventry City on 19 October and Crystal Palace on 31 October.
Kudus continues to offer a blend of creativity, technical ability and attacking unpredictability, with his capacity to create opportunities for teammates proving particularly valuable.
His nomination is a reminder that footballing influence cannot always be measured by goals alone.
Abdul Ouattara: Côte d’Ivoire
Completing the shortlist is Ivorian attacker Abdul Ouattara, whose versatility and attacking contributions have made him another standout performer.
Representing Ipswich Town, Ouattara recorded one goal and two assists across four Premier League appearances in October.
He opened his account against Fulham on 10 October before providing assists against Manchester City on 17 October and Hull City on 31 October.
His ability to contribute both as a goalscorer and creator gives him a strong case, with his all-round attacking influence setting him apart among this month’s nominees.
Five nominees. One winner. Africa decides.
The October shortlist reflects the depth of African talent making its mark in the Premier League.
From Jackson’s clinical finishing and Mbeumo’s consistency to Iwobi’s all-round influence, Kudus’ creativity and Ouattara’s versatility, each nominee has brought something different to the competition.
The first two months have already produced two deserving winners, with Mbeumo claiming August before Semenyo took the September crown.
Now the question is simple: who will be next?
