African Nations League plans are still under discussion – CAF

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) says discussions over the proposed African Nations League are still ongoing, with the competition’s format and host countries yet to be finalised.

CAF has not confirmed when the tournament will begin, how many teams will participate or how the competition would fit into the existing international football calendar.

The African Nations League has been discussed as a potential new continental competition aimed at providing more competitive matches for national teams while creating additional opportunities for players, coaches and football associations across Africa.

However, CAF has stressed that no final decision has been taken on the structure of the tournament.

The governing body is continuing consultations on key aspects of the proposed competition, including its format and the countries that could host the matches.

The lack of a confirmed format means it remains unclear whether the tournament would follow a league-based structure, involve groups and a finals stage, or adopt another system.

CAF’s latest position also means that any previously reported plans regarding potential host countries should be treated as unconfirmed until an official announcement is made.

The proposed Nations League would add another major international competition to an already busy African football calendar, which includes the Africa Cup of Nations, World Cup qualifiers, African Nations Championship and regional competitions.

CAF will therefore need to consider scheduling, travel demands and player workload as discussions continue.
