Tunisian Fencers Shine at 2015 African Games
Tunisia made an impressive start to the 2015 African Games, with its fencers delivering a string of strong performances and securing multiple medals in Brazzaville.
Sarra Besbes clinched gold in the women’s épée event, adding to Tunisia’s growing medal tally. The 26-year-old overcame Egypt’s Mahdy Ayah in a tense final, winning 9-8 to secure the top step of the podium.
Besbes showed dominance throughout the competition, defeating South Africa’s Giselle Victos 15-9 in the quarter-finals before sweeping past Egypt’s Ehab Nadim 15-6 in the semi-finals.
Her victory follows earlier successes for Tunisia in fencing, with Ines Boubakri winning gold in women’s foil and Fares Ferjani triumphing in the men’s sabre event.
There was also a podium finish for Ayoub Gerjani, who earned bronze in the men’s foil. He fell short in the semi-finals, losing 18-8 to Egypt’s Alaeddine Aboulkacem, a former Olympic silver medallist.
Tunisia’s strong performances have underscored the nation’s growing presence in African fencing, as they continue to compete with traditional continental powerhouses like Egypt.
