Players of African heritage took centre stage across Europe over the weekend, with Paris Saint-Germain’s French-Malian winger Ousmane Dembele and Juventus defender Pierre Kalulu, who is of Congolese descent, delivering decisive performances to headline Flashscore’s Team of the Week.
Their impact once again highlighted the significant contribution of African-connected talent across elite European competitions.
Dembele, whose roots trace to Senegal, Mali and Mauritania, produced a dazzling display during PSG’s commanding 5-0 victory over Marseille in Le Classique. The Ballon d’Or winner struck twice before halftime, including a brilliant individual effort that showcased his pace and finishing ability. He also created another goal, orchestrating PSG’s attacking dominance as they reclaimed top spot in Ligue 1.
Kalulu, whose family originates from the Democratic Republic of Congo, proved crucial for Juventus in their dramatic 2-2 draw with Lazio. The defender rose highest in stoppage time to head home the equaliser, rescuing a point after the Italian giants had trailed by two goals.
Paris Saint-Germain full-back Nuno Mendes, who has Angolan roots through his family heritage, also delivered an outstanding performance.
The Portuguese defender assisted Dembele’s opener while dominating defensively, winning most of his ground duels and completing every attempted dribble in a complete showing.
Elsewhere, Bayern Munich winger Luis Diaz, delivered the standout individual performance of the weekend with a perfect 10 rating.
The Colombian forward scored his first hat-trick for Bayern in a 5-1 victory over Hoffenheim and won two penalties converted by Harry Kane, taking his seasonal tally to 18 goals in all competitions.
Other top performers included Chelsea star Cole Palmer, who made Premier League history with a first-half hat-trick against Wolves. Inter Milan’s Federico Dimarco registered three assists in a dominant win over Sassuolo, while Mainz midfielder Nadiem Amiri converted two penalties in victory over Augsburg.
Athletic Club striker Gorka Guruzeta and Roma forward Donyell Malen also impressed with decisive braces.
