Twenty-one cyclists from nine African countries are competing for the title of “African Cyclist of the Year 2013,” with nominees from Algeria, Eritrea, South Africa, Morocco, Rwanda, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, and Burkina Faso. The award, created to promote African cycling and support the continent’s riders, will be announced by the end of December, with the presentation scheduled during the 2014 edition of the Tropicale Amissa Bongo in January. The jury is chaired by five-time Tour de France winner Bernard Hinault, and Chris Froome, the 2013 Tour de France winner, is an exceptional honorary member.
