The Moroccan Football Federation has announced the cancellation of the friendly match between the Moroccan national team and Gambia, originally scheduled as part of their preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations 2023.
In an official statement, the Moroccan Football Federation stated, “The match against Gambia has been canceled and will be replaced by a training match on January 11th.”
The national team is now set to depart on Sunday, January 7th, for the city of San Pedro to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations hosted by Ivory Coast from January 13th to February 11th, 2024.
According to Moroccan sports website Le360 Sport, the Atlas Lions will engage in a friendly match against Sierra Leone on January 11th.
Morocco finds itself placed in Group Six alongside Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Zambia.
Ivory Coast is the proud host of the upcoming tournament, which will initially feature group stage matches involving six groups.
Sixteen teams, comprising the top two finishers from each group and the best four third-placed teams, will advance to the knockout stages.
The reigning champions, Senegal, secured the coveted title in the previous edition held in Cameroon.
Egypt claimed the runner-up position, continuing its historical prominence in African football with seven titles.
Cameroon follows with five titles, and Ghana holds the fourth position with four championships.
