Cameroon Football Federation Apologizes for Insensitive Tweet Following Serge Aurier Injury
Serge Aurier will likely appreciate the concern shown after his frightening injury during the recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Ivory Coast and Cameroon—but not the tone of the Cameroonian Football Federation’s (Fecafoot) official Twitter account.
The incident occurred in the 56th minute of the match, which Cameroon ultimately won 4-1. During an aerial duel, Cameroonian midfielder Stéphane Mbia inadvertently delivered a headbutt to Ivorian defender Aurier, who was immediately seized by convulsions and had to be stretchered off the pitch.
The Ivory Coast Football Federation later confirmed that Aurier’s condition had improved, providing some relief after the alarming scene.
However, a controversial tweet posted from Fecafoot’s official account sparked outrage. The message read: “Aurier on the ground. But doesn’t matter,” a phrase widely condemned as callous and inappropriate given the seriousness of the injury.
The tweet was swiftly deleted, and Fecafoot’s communications unit issued an apology acknowledging the insensitivity of the post and expressing regret over the offense caused.
This incident highlights the challenges football federations face in managing social media communication, particularly during tense and emotional moments on the field.
