Affies eye sixth straight win as Maritzburg College test looms at Goldstones

Affies will put a five-match winning streak on the line in one of the standout schools rugby clashes of the season when they travel to an intimidating Goldstones to face Maritzburg College on Saturday, 25 July.

The Pretoria powerhouse, full name Afrikaanse Hoer Seunskool, head to Pietermaritzburg as form favourites after a dominant run that has propelled them into the title conversation. Their mix of raw forward muscle and incisive backline play has overwhelmed opponents since the start of the winter term.

Adding further intrigue is the expected return of star scrum-half Fourie Roberts, whose absence has been keenly felt in recent weeks. His presence could tilt a finely balanced contest between two of South Africa’s traditional rugby nurseries.

Roberts return boosts in-form Affies

Affies’ resurgence since the break has been built on set-piece authority and relentless physicality, with their pack regularly laying a platform for a dangerous back division to strike from broken play.

The reintroduction of Roberts is seen as a major boost. Renowned for his rapid service from the base and sharp decision-making, the playmaker is regarded as a crucial link between forwards and backs, particularly in hostile away conditions.

“It is always tough down in Maritzburg, they have had a good year. If we can dominate the setpiece, protect the ball we will do well. They are at home which always gets players up for a game,” said Ruan Jacobs, Affies’ head of rugby.

College banking on home fortress and Sharks stars

Maritzburg College, dressed in their familiar blue and white hoops, have also enjoyed an impressive campaign and will be determined to rebound after a recent defeat to Michaelhouse.

Despite that setback, College have consistently shown resilience and quality, and they will be bolstered this weekend by the return of several Sharks Craven Week representatives. Those provincial-age players bring both pedigree and big-match experience to a side already rich in confidence.

The Goldstones ground, steeped in tradition, is expected to be a major factor. The home crowd, combined with the familiarity of the surroundings, has historically lifted College to notable victories over travelling giants.

The atmosphere on Saturday is predicted to be no different, with a vocal turnout anticipated to create a challenging environment for the visitors from Pretoria.

Both coaching staffs see the contest up front as the central battleground. Jacobs has repeatedly underlined the importance of Affies imposing themselves at scrum and line-out time to stifle College’s attacking threats.

If Affies’ pack can secure clean ball and maintain a high share of possession, they are likely to wear down College over 70 minutes and continue their surge as championship contenders.

However, if Maritzburg College’s forwards, strengthened by their returning Sharks representatives, can match or even better Affies physically, the hosts will fancy their chances of turning Goldstones into a fortress once again and claiming a statement scalp.
