Algerian U20s Kick Off U20 AFCON Qualifiers Against Mauritania
The Algerian U20 national team will begin their qualifiers for the U20 African Cup of Nations this Sunday at the Bologhine Stadium in Algiers. The first-round opponent for the two-legged tie is Mauritania, a team the young Fennecs must approach with caution.
Led by coach Mohamed Mekhazni, the squad has been in training at the Sidi Moussa National Technical Center for several days. This will be the team’s first official match, nearly a year after its formation. Mekhazni emphasized the need for vigilance, warning that Mauritania should not be underestimated.
“Some may think Mauritania will be a mere formality, but our mission will be very delicate,” the national coach told APS. “Mauritania’s football officials are investing heavily in their U20 squad, giving them the resources to succeed. They have even played several friendlies abroad against major European clubs, including FC Barcelona at this level.”
Algeria, absent from the previous U20 AFCON qualifiers, began preparations for this edition at the start of 2015, shortly after Mekhazni’s appointment as technical director. “Overall, we worked well, but much of the time was spent scouting. It took months to finalize my squad. I believe we are ready to face this challenge, even though it will not be easy,” Mekhazni added, noting that Mauritania “rarely succeeds against Algerian youth teams.”
The young Fennecs hope to start their qualifying campaign strongly and set the tone for a successful run in Zambia.
