Algeria Qualifies for U23 AFCON in Senegal, Eyes Rio 2016 Olympic Spot
Algeria’s U23 team has secured qualification for the 2015 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations, marking their second consecutive appearance in the tournament. The competition, which will take place in Senegal in December, offers a crucial opportunity for the team to secure one of three spots for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Despite a 0-0 draw in the return leg against Sierra Leone, following a 2-0 win in the first leg, the Algerian team progressed on aggregate. Swiss coach André Schürmann’s squad could not add to their advantage in the second match, but the result was enough to see them through to the tournament.
Algeria now joins host nation Senegal, as well as the other teams that will emerge from the ongoing play-offs, all competing for a coveted place in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. This marks a significant turnaround for the team, which missed out on Olympic qualification in 2012 after a disappointing final match during the qualification process in Morocco.
The upcoming U23 AFCON in Senegal will be a key stepping stone for Algeria as they look to make their mark on the continental stage and secure a ticket to the Olympics.
