AFCON 2027: Sierra Leone vs Zimbabwe preview, head-to-head, kick-off time and more

Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe will open their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaigns on Thursday with both sides facing an early test of their ambitions in a fiercely competitive Group E.

The Leone Stars will host the Warriors at the Stade Ben Ahmed El Abdi in El Jadida, Morocco, with kick-off scheduled for 19:00 GMT.

With only the top two teams in the group guaranteed qualification, neither side can afford a slow start. Democratic Republic of Congo and Equatorial Guinea complete a group widely expected to produce a closely fought battle for the two available places.

A victory on Thursday would provide either Sierra Leone or Zimbabwe with an important early advantage before the group becomes more congested.

Sierra Leone begin new era without home advantage

Sierra Leone’s preparations have been shaped by change, with Didier Gomes Da Rosa set to take charge of his first competitive match as head coach.

The Frenchman has assembled a 25-man squad combining emerging talent with players who have considerable international experience. He will be expected to quickly establish his tactical identity despite having limited time to work with the team.

Charlton Athletic forward Daniel Kanu is among the players expected to carry much of the attacking responsibility. His pace and finishing could prove important against a Zimbabwe side capable of controlling possession.

However, Sierra Leone will be without Plymouth Argyle forward Mustapha Bundu, who misses the fixture through injury.

Ranked 122nd in the latest FIFA World Rankings, the Leone Stars are likely to rely on defensive organisation and quick transitions as they seek to exploit spaces behind the Zimbabwe defence.

Their biggest disadvantage, though, could be the absence of a genuine home crowd.

The match has been moved to Morocco because Sierra Leone’s usual home venue does not meet the required stadium standards, meaning the Leone Stars will have to secure a result away from their traditional surroundings.

Warriors arrive with confidence

Zimbabwe also enter the campaign with a new-look technical direction and will be hoping their recent preparations can translate into a strong opening result.

The Warriors completed their final training sessions in Casablanca before travelling to El Jadida, giving the squad time to acclimatise to conditions ahead of the match.

Unlike their opponents, Zimbabwe head into the fixture without any reported injuries, allowing the technical team to select from a fully fit squad.

Motherwell attacker Tawanda Maswanhise will be one of the players expected to provide the creative spark. His ability to operate from wide areas could be crucial in testing Sierra Leone’s defensive structure.

Zimbabwe are ranked 130th in the world, eight places below Sierra Leone, but their squad possesses the quality and balance to dictate possession and control the tempo.

First competitive meeting raises the stakes

Thursday’s fixture will also make history as the first competitive senior men’s international meeting between Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe.

That leaves both technical teams without previous competitive encounters between the nations to draw upon, increasing the importance of in-game adjustments.

Neither side enters with a clear historical advantage, and the neutral setting further removes the usual influence of home conditions.

Instead, the contest is likely to be decided by tactical discipline, individual quality and which team adapts quickest to the demands of a new qualification campaign.
