AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Nigeria fight back to beat Madagascar

Nigeria recovered from an early setback to defeat Madagascar 2-1 in their Group L opener, securing three important points in the AFCON 2027 qualifiers.

Madagascar made the brighter start and moved ahead in the 16th minute. Ehsan Kari finished Ryan Ponti’s assist, giving the island nation a surprise advantage and forcing Nigeria to respond.

The Super Eagles gradually grew into the contest and found an equaliser just before half-time. George Ilenikhena headed home from Alex Iwobi’s delivery in first-half stoppage time, restoring balance before the interval.

Nigeria completed the turnaround in the 65th minute. Substitute Moses Usor converted Semi Ajayi’s assist, rewarding the team’s improved second-half display. Madagascar attempted to recover, but Nigeria managed the closing stages effectively and protected its narrow lead.

Iwobi was selected as the match’s standout performer, while Kari’s early goal provided Madagascar with a positive moment despite the defeat.

Nigeria will play Guinea-Bissau on September 29 in Group L. Madagascar will face Tanzania on the same day. After the opening round, Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria have three points each, while Madagascar and Tanzania remain without points.
