AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Namibia beat Congo Republic in Group G opener

Namibia began their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Congo Republic in Group G on Thursday, September 24.

The match was closely contested during a cautious first half, with neither side able to create a clear breakthrough. Namibia eventually found the opening two minutes after the restart. Bethuel Muzeu finished a move created by Riaan Hanamub in the 47th minute, giving the hosts a crucial advantage.

Congo Republic tried to respond through a series of attacking substitutions, bringing on Mons Bassouamina, Merveille Ndockyt, Beni Namboka and Yvan Ikia Dimi. Despite those changes, Namibia’s defence remained composed and protected its lead.

The visitors had one final opportunity in stoppage time, but Namboka’s close-range effort drifted wide. Namibia held on through six added minutes to secure three valuable points. Namibian left back Riaan Hanamub was named the match’s top performer by Sofascore.

Namibia will play their next Group G game against Comoros on September 29. Congo Republic will take on Cameroon on the same day.
