AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Mozambique thrash Sudan to seize Group J lead

Mozambique produced a commanding performance in Group J, defeating Sudan 4-1 to move top of the AFCON 2027 qualifying standings.

The result gave the Mambas four points from their opening two matches, while Sudan suffered a damaging defeat in the race for qualification.

Mozambique made the breakthrough in the 24th minute when Witi Quembo finished a move created by Ricardo Guimarães. The hosts carried their advantage into halftime and returned with even greater attacking purpose.

Chamito Alfandega doubled the lead immediately after the restart, setting the tone for a dominant second half. Guimarães then added Mozambique’s third goal in the 58th minute before Alfandega completed his brace four minutes later, leaving Sudan facing a daunting 4-0 deficit.

Sudan managed a late consolation when Yasin Hamed converted a penalty in the 88th minute, but Mozambique comfortably protected its advantage through the closing stages.

Mozambique will play their next game against Ethiopia on November 11th in Group J. Sudan will take on Senegal on the same day. Mozambique leads the group with 4 points after two games, followed by Senegal, then Sudan, with Ethiopia bottom with no points.
