AFCON 2027 qualifiers: Morocco beat Gabon to go top of Group A

Morocco made a winning start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-0 victory over Gabon at Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah.

Noussair Mazraoui opened the scoring in the 36th minute before Soufiane Rahimi added a second late on to secure three points for the Atlas Lions.

Mazraoui puts Morocco ahead

Morocco took the lead after 36 minutes when Mazraoui found the net following an assist from Nayef Aguerd.

The goal gave the hosts a 1-0 advantage as they looked to begin their Group A campaign with victory.

Gabon were unable to find a response, with Morocco maintaining their lead as the match entered its final stages.

Rahimi seals Morocco victory

The Atlas Lions doubled their advantage in the 84th minute through Rahimi.

His goal ensured Morocco secured all three points and moved to the top of Group A on goal difference.

Niger also have three points after beating Lesotho 2-1 in their opening qualifier, leaving Morocco narrowly ahead at the summit.

Morocco face Lesotho next

Morocco will play their second AFCON 2027 qualifier against Lesotho on 29 September.

Niger’s victory over Lesotho means the North African side will be looking to maintain their position at the top of the group when they return to action.
