AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Mali open campaign in style with win over Cape Verde

Mali began their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign with a convincing 3-1 victory over Cape Verde in Group K on September 25.

The hosts made an ideal start when Ange Tia opened the scoring after only five minutes, converting Lassine Sinayoko’s assist. Cape Verde responded quickly, with Sidny Lopes Cabral restoring parity in the 10th minute.

Mali regained control before the interval. Dorgeles Nene struck in the 39th minute after being set up by Amadou Haidara, sending the hosts into half-time with a 2-1 advantage.

Nene completed his impressive performance shortly after the restart, scoring again in the 51st minute following Kamory Doumbia’s pass. His second goal gave Mali breathing room and effectively settled the contest.

Cape Verde made several substitutions as they searched for a route back into the match, but Mali’s defence remained composed through the closing stages. Nene was named player of the match after his decisive contribution.

Mali will play Liberia on September 29 in Group K, while Cape Verde face Rwanda on the same day. Mali and Rwanda have three points after the opening round, whereas Cape Verde and Liberia remain pointless.
