AFCON 2027 qualifiers: Malawi v South Sudan – Preview, talking points and prediction

Malawi begin their bid to return to the Africa Cup of Nations when they host South Sudan in their opening Group B qualifier on Thursday.

The Flames will face South Sudan at 16:00 as coach Kalisto Pasuwa begins the latest attempt to guide Malawi back to the continental finals.

Malawi were drawn alongside seven-time champions Egypt, Angola and South Sudan, with the top two teams in the group qualifying for the 2027 tournament, which will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

Malawi hoping to build on historic AFCON run

The Flames’ most recent appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations came at the 2021 tournament, where they reached the knockout stages for the first time in their history.

Malawi were eventually eliminated by Morocco in the last 16, but their run represented a significant achievement and gave the team valuable experience of competing beyond the group stage.

Pasuwa described the Group B draw as fair and has stressed the importance of preparation and unity as Malawi face opponents with different styles and levels of experience.

Egypt represent the biggest challenge in the group, with the Pharaohs holding the record for the most AFCON titles and boasting extensive experience at international level.

Malawi, however, are familiar with Egypt from previous qualifying campaigns and major tournaments.

Angola and South Sudan offer crucial tests

Angola will also provide a significant challenge after continuing to establish themselves as a competitive side in African football.

The Palancas Negras reached the quarter-finals of the 2023 AFCON before losing 1-0 to Nigeria, underlining the quality Malawi will face in the group.

South Sudan could provide Malawi with an important opportunity to collect points, although their previous meetings mean the Flames cannot afford to underestimate their opponents.

With only two qualifying places available, points dropped against teams competing directly for those positions could prove particularly significant.

Flames face busy qualification schedule

The qualifying campaign will give Pasuwa several opportunities to assess and develop his squad before the decisive fixtures.

The first two matchdays are scheduled for the September-October international window, followed by another double-header in November.

The final two matches will be played in March 2027.

Malawi will therefore be looking to make a positive start against South Sudan before facing the tougher challenges presented by Egypt and Angola.

A strong opening could give the Flames early momentum in their attempt to return to the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time since their memorable 2021 campaign.
