AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Madagascar face Tanzania in crucial Group L battle – Preview

Madagascar will be looking to put their opening-day disappointment behind them when they welcome Tanzania in a crucial Group L encounter of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on Tuesday.

The Barea began their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Nigeria in Uyo, despite taking the lead and giving the Super Eagles a difficult contest before eventually losing their advantage.

That result leaves Madagascar with no points heading into their first home fixture, making Tuesday’s meeting particularly important as they attempt to get their qualification campaign back on track.

They will come up against a Tanzania side also searching for its first points after losing 2-0 at home to Guinea-Bissau in the opening round. Franculino Djú and Mama Baldé scored for Guinea-Bissau to hand the Taifa Stars a disappointing start.

For Tanzania, however, the situation in Group L is different from the other teams. The Taifa Stars are already guaranteed a place at the 2027 AFCON finals because Tanzania is one of the tournament’s co-hosts alongside Kenya and Uganda. Consequently, the remaining teams are competing for the group’s additional qualification place.

That does not mean Tuesday’s fixture lacks importance for Tanzania. A positive result would provide Miguel Ángel Gamondi’s side with momentum and give them an opportunity to disrupt the battle between Madagascar, Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau.

Madagascar, meanwhile, know that another defeat would leave them with a difficult road ahead. Coach Corentin Martins will want his players to reproduce the competitive qualities they showed against Nigeria while improving their efficiency in front of goal.

The Barea also enter the fixture with confidence from their recent progress on the international stage, having reached the final of the African Nations Championship before beginning their AFCON qualifying campaign.

With both teams coming off opening defeats, Tuesday’s encounter is therefore an opportunity for either side to change the mood around its campaign.

Madagascar will have the advantage of playing in front of their home supporters, while Tanzania will be determined to respond after surrendering two goals against Guinea-Bissau.

The match is scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, at 13:00 GMT at the Stade d’Honneur in Meknes.

With Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau already taking early control of the group after victories on Matchday One, both Madagascar and Tanzania will be eager to avoid falling further behind in the race for the only qualification place available to a non-host nation.

Tuesday’s clash could therefore prove an important turning point for Madagascar and Tanzania as the battle for Group L supremacy begins to take shape.
