AFCON 2027 qualifiers: Equatorial Guinea vs Sierra Leone preview, head-to-head, standings and more

Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone will meet in Yaoundé on Monday with both sides under pressure to avoid a second successive defeat in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The two nations sit at the bottom of Group E after disappointing opening results and will meet at the Stade Omnisport Ahmadou Ahidjo at 16:00 UTC, knowing another loss would leave their qualification hopes under significant strain.

Both sides desperate for a response

Equatorial Guinea began their campaign with a 2-0 defeat away to DR Congo. They struggled to build sustained attacking moves and lacked the cutting edge required to trouble their opponents.

Sierra Leone’s opening match was more dramatic. The Leone Stars appeared to be cruising after Alie Conteh and Sallieu Tarawallie gave them a 2-0 half-time lead against Zimbabwe.

However, their advantage disappeared after the break as Zimbabwe scored three unanswered goals to complete a remarkable 3-2 comeback.

That collapse has placed particular attention on Sierra Leone’s defensive organisation ahead of Monday’s encounter.

Tactical battle expected in Yaoundé

Equatorial Guinea are expected to rely on their usual approach of patient possession and defensive discipline as they look to control the tempo.

Their recent matches have generally produced few goals, with eight of their last 10 games finishing with fewer than 2.5 goals.

They will need to prevent Sierra Leone from exploiting spaces during quick transitions while finding greater penetration in the final third.

Sierra Leone, meanwhile, showed against Zimbabwe that they can pose a threat through fast counter-attacks. Their ability to score twice before half-time demonstrated their attacking potential, but their defensive collapse exposed concerns over their ability to maintain structure throughout a full match.

The Leone Stars have used their time in Yaoundé for recovery and tactical work as they seek to correct the problems that cost them against Zimbabwe.

Equatorial Guinea hold recent edge

The teams last met at the 2021 AFCON, which was played in January 2022. Equatorial Guinea secured a 1-0 victory through Pablo Ganet’s first-half strike.

Sierra Leone had the opportunity to level from the penalty spot late in the match, but Jesús Owono saved Kei Kamara’s effort to preserve Equatorial Guinea’s lead.

Their overall meetings have generally been competitive, with Equatorial Guinea holding a narrow advantage in goal difference.

Group E pressure mounts

DR Congo currently lead Group E with three points and a +2 goal difference, while Zimbabwe are second with three points and a +1 goal difference.

Sierra Leone are third on zero points with a -1 goal difference, with Equatorial Guinea bottom after their -2 opening deficit.

With neither side wanting to suffer another defeat, Monday’s match could develop into a cautious contest, particularly in the opening stages.

The two teams will therefore be looking to balance the need for three points with the risk of exposing themselves defensively as they attempt to revive their AFCON 2027 qualification campaigns.
