AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Congo and Cameroon share spoils

Congo and Cameroon shared the spoils after playing out a 1-1 draw in their second Group G game of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The two sides went into the encounter with contrasting results from their opening matches, but both were determined to strengthen their position in the group with a positive result.

Playing on home soil, Congo made their intentions clear early on and were rewarded for their efforts in the 24th minute when Geltany Bantsiele opened the scoring.

Bantsiele’s goal gave the hosts a valuable advantage and lifted the confidence of the Congolese side as they looked to secure their first points of the qualifying campaign.

Cameroon, however, refused to allow the early setback to derail their plans. The Indomitable Lions gradually grew into the game and increased the pressure as they searched for an equaliser.

Their persistence eventually paid off when Melvin Singa turned the ball into his own net, allowing Cameroon to draw level and bringing the visitors back into the contest.

With the score level, both teams pushed for a decisive second goal, but neither side was able to find the breakthrough in the remainder of the match.

Congo held firm to secure a point in front of their home supporters, while Cameroon also left with a share of the points as the encounter ended 1-1.

The result represents a recovery of sorts for Congo after they began their Group G campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Namibia. The draw gives them their first point of the qualifying series.

Cameroon, meanwhile, remain unbeaten after their opening two matches. The Indomitable Lions had started their campaign with a convincing 3-1 victory over Comoros and followed that result with a point away from home.

Both teams will now turn their attention to their next Group G fixtures as the race for qualification continues.
