AFCON 2027 qualifiers: Burkina Faso and DR Congo climb to top after wins

Burkina Faso and DR Congo moved to the top of their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaigns with narrow victories on Monday, while Equatorial Guinea revived their hopes and Tunisia were held to a 2-2 draw by Botswana.

Burkina Faso claimed a valuable three points away against the Central African Republic after controlling much of the match.

The Stallions dominated possession for long periods before finding the breakthrough they needed. The Central African Republic pushed forward in the closing stages in search of an equaliser, but Burkina Faso’s defence held firm to preserve a clean sheet and secure the win.

Equatorial Guinea also recorded a 1-0 victory, defeating Sierra Leone to put their qualification campaign back on track.

Loren Zuniga gave Equatorial Guinea the perfect start by scoring in the opening minute. Sierra Leone attempted to respond, but Equatorial Guinea remained disciplined and managed the rest of the match effectively to protect their lead and take all three points.

“I am very happy for this group; we have gained experience and secured a precious victory through collective work. We worked every day to be efficient, and this win validates what we have been building together,” said Equatorial Guinea head coach Juan Micha.

DR Congo earned a 2-1 victory away from home against Zimbabwe after a composed performance from the Leopards.

Yoane Wissa opened the scoring in the 30th minute, before Samuel Moutoussamy added a second just before half-time. Zimbabwe applied pressure late on and reduced the deficit when Marshall Munetsi scored in stoppage time, but DR Congo resisted the final push to claim the win.

“We knew we had to play a good game for us to win. In matches like this, focus and efficiency from the beginning are essential to taking control,” said DR Congo head coach Sebastien Desabre.

Tunisia’s winless run continued as they were held by Botswana in Rades.

Botswana stunned the hosts by taking an early lead through Thatayaone Kgamanyane. Tunisia responded through Hazem Mastouri, who scored twice to turn the match around.

The hosts could not hold on to their advantage, however. Lebogang Ditsele equalised for Botswana on the hour mark, ensuring the visitors left with a point and both teams shared the spoils.
