AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Algeria open campaign with win over Zambia

Algeria launched their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign with a 3-1 victory over Zambia in Group I, overcoming a brief second-half setback to secure three valuable points.

The hosts started sharply and needed only two minutes to take the lead. Jaouen Hadjam finished Mohamed Amoura’s assist, rewarding Algeria’s fast opening and giving Brahim Hemdani’s side early control.

Zambia responded with greater purpose after the break. Fashion Sakala levelled in the 57th minute from David Simukonda’s pass, briefly shifting the momentum and giving the visitors hope of an upset.

Algeria answered decisively. Ibrahim Maza restored the lead in the 67th minute after another contribution from Amoura, before substitute Anis Hadj Moussa sealed the result seven minutes later. Maza was named player of the match after an influential display.

Zambia pressed late but could not create another breakthrough, while Algeria saw out the contest confidently.

Algeria will face Burundi in their next Group I fixture on September 29, while Zambia meet Togo on the same day. Algeria and Togo have three points after matchday one, while Burundi and Zambia remain without a point.
