AFCON 2026 Qualifiers: Kenya players boycott training before Eritrea game

Pitso Mosimane has begun work with South Africa’s national team after returning to take charge of Bafana Bafana.

The experienced coach marked the start of his latest spell with the national side with a message highlighting the responsibility and pride attached to leading the team.

“And so, the work has started,” Mosimane said.

“It is a privilege to once again serve my country and lead our national team. The responsibility is enormous, but so is the pride.

“We know what lies ahead. We know what this badge means to millions of South Africans.”

Mosimane’s return places him back at the helm of the national team after previously guiding Bafana Bafana between 2010 and 2012.

His appointment comes with expectations of building on his previous achievements in international football and bringing renewed direction to the South African side.

Mosimane is one of the most decorated South African coaches, having enjoyed significant success at club level, particularly during his time with Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

He led Al Ahly to two CAF Champions League titles, in 2020 and 2021, and also guided the club to FIFA Club World Cup bronze medals on two occasions.

His return to Bafana Bafana will now see him focus on the national team’s immediate competitive demands while also working to establish a squad capable of challenging for major honours.

Mosimane’s message suggests an awareness of the expectations surrounding his return, with the coach acknowledging that the national team represents more than football to supporters across the country.

The task ahead will include assessing the available players, establishing his tactical approach and preparing the squad for the challenges facing South Africa on the international stage.

For Mosimane, however, the immediate priority is clear: the work has begun.

And with the Bafana Bafana badge carrying the expectations of millions of supporters, his return is likely to be closely followed as he begins his latest chapter in charge of South Africa.
