Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou is on the brink of breaking one of the most iconic records in Africa Cup of Nations history after once again starring for the Atlas Lions on their path to the 2025 final.
He has led Morocco to the title match against Senegal, their first AFCON final appearance since 2004, capping a near-perfect campaign.
In this edition of the tournament, Bono has kept five clean sheets, with the only goal conceded coming in the 1-1 draw against Mali, taking his total to 11 shutouts in AFCON matches. This achievement allows him to equal Ivorian goalkeeper Boubacar Barry, who set his mark during Ivory Coast’s victorious 2015 run.
Bono had already surpassed the Moroccan record for AFCON clean sheets, previously held by legendary keeper Badou Zaki, after the opening win over Comoros. He then continued his dominance with clean sheets against Zambia, Tanzania, Cameroon and Nigeria in the semi-final.
Now playing for Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia, Bono is edging closer to the all-time record held by Egypt’s Essam El Hadary, who boasts 14 AFCON clean sheets.
The Moroccan stopper needs just three more, or possibly two depending on how appearances are counted, to equal or even surpass the Egyptian icon’s historic milestone.
