In high-stake clash on Friday, January 9, 2026, the Taranga Lions will lock horns with the Eagles of Mali at the Tangier Stadium. It promises to be a thrilling encounter, as both teams will be yearning for victory to secure a place in the semifinals of the continental showpiece.
However, Pape Thiaw, has stressed his outfit determination to triumph over Mali to secure a place in the semifinals of the tournament.
“The derby is supposed to be decided by a win. It is up to us to do everything necessary to ensure qualification and reach the semi-finals.”
“Continuing to play here in Tangier is a reward for us for finishing first in a very difficult group. We hope to continue playing here because we see the support of the fans and this motivates us a lot
Meanwhile, Pape Thiaw has refused to describe the upcoming clash against Mali as a war, insisting they will stay within the realm of sport.
“For me, it’s just a football match. We can’t talk about a war between Mali and Senegal. We’ll stay within the realm of sport. My father is Senegalese and my mother is from Mali.”
