Algeria head coach Vladimir Petkovic has made it clear that past Africa Cup of Nations setbacks will not define his team’s mindset heading into AFCON 2025, insisting that previous disappointments should be treated as lessons rather than burdens.
Ahead of the Desert Foxes’ opening match at the tournament, the Swiss tactician has stressed the importance of focusing on the present rather than being weighed down by history.
Petkovic believes Algeria’s recent struggles at the continental level should serve as an experience that helps the team rebuild confidence, unity and belief.
“The most important thing is not to look too much at the past. We must live in the present, work every day, and improve step by step. The past is an experience, not a burden. We need to focus on what we can improve today,” he said as quoted by CAFOnline.
Algeria have been drawn in a challenging group and will face Sudan, Burkina Faso and Equatorial Guinea in the group stage as they begin their quest to turn a new page at AFCON 2025.
Since assuming the role, the former Switzerland coach has preferred a quiet and methodical approach instead of bold declarations. Preparations have been marked by a training camp abroad, a carefully selected squad and a measured outlook as Algeria look to reset and make a fresh impression at the competition.
