Cameroon winger Christian Bassogog says his outfit started carelessly in their final group game against Mozambique in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
Despite the sloppy start to the match, the Indomitable Lions managed to secure victory to progress to the last 16 of the continental showpiece, being held in Morocco.
Cameroon will face South Africa in the round of 16 after finishing second on goal difference behind Ivory Coast, following a tie on points.
“We are happy after the victory over Mozambique. Our mentality from the beginning was to win.”
“We told ourselves that we couldn’t take this match lightly. At the beginning, we started the match a little carelessly. After the break, we talked amongst ourselves. We said that we had to come back with the same mentality with which we started this tournament. I think that’s where Kovani scored a great goal. Honestly, it gave us the win.”
“We are a young team, and everyone in it wants to do their best. I think this really motivates the team because all the players don’t know whether they will start the match or not. This gives the team a morale boost and shows that there is a good team spirit.”
“Even if I don’t play, I’m here to cheer on my younger teammates. This tournament is the greatest celebration the continent can have for us.”
Cameroon came from behind to win 2-1 and finished second on goal difference behind Ivory Coast after both teams finished with 7 points.
Bassogog previously played with Broos in 2017 wearing the Cameroon national team jersey, and they won the title against the Egyptian national team by winning the final at that time.
