Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has admitted his side needed to fix early shortcomings after a slow start in their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations against Comoros.

The tournament hosts struggled to break down stubborn opposition in the first half and went into the interval goalless at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Sunday night.

Morocco, however, showed greater urgency after the break, with goals from Brahim Diaz and Ayoub El Kaabi sealing a 2–0 victory.

Regragui acknowledged that nerves and match intensity played a role in the sluggish opening.

“Getting into the competitive atmosphere was not easy, and the opening match is always complicated,” Regragui said after the game.

“We didn’t manage to create many opportunities during the first half due to the lack of our players inside the penalty area, but we corrected the situation in the second half thanks to the changes we made, in addition to the support of the fans,” he added.

Morocco will turn their attention to their next Group A fixture against Mali on Friday.
