AFCON 2025: We are not scared playing against Morocco - Comoros coach Stefano Cusin

Comoros head coach Stefano Cusin has insisted his side will not be intimidated when they face hosts Morocco in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) opener on Sunday.

Speaking to SNRTnews, Cusin acknowledged the magnitude of the challenge.

“Morocco are one of the best teams in the world, with 19 consecutive wins,” he said. “They’re not just playing matches at home—they’re aiming to win the tournament.”

The Italian coach highlighted the gap in experience and status between the two teams but stressed that his players will approach the game with confidence and without fear. “We are a young team, still developing, and there’s no pressure on us,” Cusin said.

“It’s Morocco who have the obligation to get a result. For us, this is an opportunity to be part of the show and maybe surprise people.”

Cusin also praised Morocco for their hosting of the tournament, describing the facilities and organization as impressive.

“It’s a great country, very well organized. The stadiums are top-level, and the infrastructure is excellent,” he said. “We’ve played in Oujda, Berkane, Casablanca, and El Jadida, so we’re familiar with the country.”

He also gave a personal nod to Romain Saïss, the Moroccan defender he coached at Wolverhampton. “I’d like to acknowledge Romain Saïss, whom I signed when he was at Angers,” Cusin added.

Comoros winger Faiz Selemani echoed his coach’s confident tone ahead of the clash against Walid Regragui’s Morocco.

“We want to improve on our last AFCON performance,” Selemani said. “We’re motivated for the match, without pressure, and we want to enjoy ourselves.”

While recognizing the strength of the hosts, Selemani emphasized that Comoros will stick to their own style. “Morocco are a great team, but we also have our qualities and our values,” he said.

He described playing in Morocco as a special experience. “It’s a fantastic country, and I hope this edition of the tournament lives up to expectations.”

Comoros are scheduled to arrive in Casablanca on December 17 to complete their preparations ahead of the opening game. The team respects their opponents but remains confident in their abilities, aiming to make the most of this rare opportunity on the AFCON stage.
