Uganda head coach Paul Put has stressed the importance of belief, courage, and mental resilience as his side prepares for a decisive Africa Cup of Nations Group C clash against Nigeria in Morocco.
With progression to the knockout stage hanging in the balance, only a positive result will keep the Cranes’ tournament hopes alive when they face the Super Eagles in their final group match.
Nigeria arrive at the fixture in dominant form, having claimed maximum points from their opening two games and carrying the confidence of a team that finished as runners-up in the previous AFCON.
In contrast, Uganda have struggled to make an impact, securing just a single point from a defeat to Tunisia and a draw with Tanzania. The upcoming contest is therefore a must-win for Put’s side.
Acknowledging the challenge posed by their opponents, Put remains confident in his team’s ability to rise to the occasion.
“We know we are facing a very good team, who were the finalists in the last AFCON edition. Also, they have performed very well, because they have the maximum of their points,” he said, highlighting the quality and pedigree of the Super Eagles.
Despite the formidable opposition, the Belgian coach insists that his squad is mentally prepared and motivated to compete at the highest level.
“The players are willing to give their best for tomorrow’s game. It’s going to be hard, it’s going to be difficult, but in football, everything is possible. We want to stick with the mentality that everyone is beatable and see what will happen,” Put added.
Uganda’s preparation has focused on fostering a resilient mindset, with an emphasis on teamwork, discipline, and tactical awareness.
The Cranes will need to balance defensive solidity with attacking intent to challenge a Nigerian side that has demonstrated both efficiency and creativity in their previous matches.
Tuesday’s clash will be a stern test of Uganda’s character and ability to perform under pressure.
A win would not only secure their place in the round of 16 but also serve as a statement of intent, proving that the Cranes can compete against Africa’s elite.
Conversely, failure to claim three points would end their campaign, underlining the high stakes and intensity of the encounter.
For Paul Put and his players, the focus is clear: mental strength, unwavering belief, and maximum effort will be essential to overcome Nigeria and keep Uganda’s AFCON ambitions alive.
