Tunisian football great Karim Haggui praised Egypt’s display after their 1–0 win over South Africa, saying the team has finally returned to the familiar image that Africa knows so well.
The result, achieved in the second round of AFCON 2025 group matches, ensured the Pharaohs extended their remarkable habit of always reaching the knockout stages.
Haggui, speaking in the post-match studio on beIN Sports, said: “This is the Egypt team we know,” highlighting how the side combined solidity, mentality and tournament experience. He singled out goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy as the standout performer, describing his performance as superb across the 90 minutes.
The former Tunisia defender also reserved special praise for Egypt’s centre-back pairing of Rami Rabia and Yasser Ibrahim, who he felt showed composure and strength and formed a barrier in front of South Africa’s attack. Haggui added that coach Hossam Hassan’s substitutions and choices were smart and impactful, reflecting a clear game plan.
Mohamed Salah scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time, taking Egypt into the last 16 and reinforcing their status as record seven-time African champions showing their true identity again.
