South Africa midfielder Relebohile Mofokeng has taken full responsibility for his outfit defeat against Cameroon in the last 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Bafana Bafana painfully excited the continental showpiece on Sunday night after falling short to the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon 2-1 in the round of 16 clash.
Junior Tchamadeu and Christian Kofane scored in the first half for the Indomitable Lions, while Evidence Makgopa scored to reduce the deficit for the Bafana Bafana in a high-stake clash.
And Mogokeng, who plies his trade for Orlando Pirates feels had he converted a scoring opportunity early in the match, perhaps, the results could have been different.
Mofokeng received a splendid pass from Oswin Appollis within the first 10 minutes of the match, controlled it with his chest and faced goal-wards but took his shot over the bar.
“I think that chance was the one that could have opened the game for us,” said Mofokeng on SABC TV.
“I also take responsibility that I should have scored that chance, but we created a lot of chances, and we should have used our chances. It’s not the first time that we trailed 1-0 and we encouraged each other that we could get a goal.
“We didn’t lose hope because we believed we could progress from the last 16 round. Our spirits were high because the game wasn’t over yet, it had just started.
“We should have continued to work hard and continued to play how we did because I think we had the game in our hands we just needed to use our opportunities.”
Having being eliminated from the AFCON, the Bafana Bafana will turn their attention to the 2026 World Cup tournament to be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
