Senegal legend, El-Hadji Diouf, has vehemently dismissed allegations of Morocco bribing referees at the just ended 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, labeling the claims as reckless and unjustified, while calling for greater responsibility in football discourse.
Speaking amid ongoing debates surrounding refereeing decisions involving Moroccan teams, the former African football icon did not mince his words, warning that unsubstantiated accusations risk damaging the integrity of the game and unfairly tarnishing reputations.
“I say this with a sense of responsibility: accusing Morocco of bribing referees is a dangerous and completely unfair slip,” Diouf stated, emphasizing that such narratives go beyond healthy criticism and cross into harmful speculation.
Diouf stressed that disagreements over officiating are part of football, but insisted that they must be addressed through proper channels rather than public allegations. According to him, blaming referees’ decisions on corruption without evidence only fuels tension, deepens divisions among fans, and undermines the credibility of African football on the global stage.
He also highlighted Morocco’s recent football progress, noting that the country’s success has been built on long-term investment, strong organization, and consistent development rather than illicit practices. Diouf urged observers and commentators to acknowledge this growth fairly, even when emotions run high after controversial matches.
The former Liverpool star has, however, called on players, officials, and supporters across the continent to promote respect and responsibility, reminding all stakeholders that protecting the image of African football should remain a shared priority.
Meanwhile, Diouf has heaped praise on Morocco’s organization of the Africa Cup of Nations, considering that the Kingdom presented an exceptional edition of the tournament in terms of infrastructure, hospitality, organization, and security, adding that what was achieved “reflects Africa’s ability to host a successful tournament.”
Senegal emerged as champions of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, narrowly defeating Morocco in the dramatic final, held at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
